Prana: energy, life force            Vidya: knower of            Yoga: union

This program is for serious students and yoga teachers who yearn to go deeply into yoga as a spiritual practice that prepares the body for meditation and spiritual awakening. It will appeal to people who love the physical and energetic benefits of asana and sense the value of working directly with energy through the body. This is the 5,000 year old complex, holistic system of raja yoga. The steps and practices are worked with sequentially and simultaneously.

The yamas and niyamas are the philosophical underpinnings of our lives and practice and are the first two rungs in the 8 rungs of yoga. Asana (poses) is third and pranayama (control and expansion of energy) is next. These four comprise Hatha yoga. The final four are pratyahara (withdrawing the mind from the senses), dharana (developing concentration, a one-pointed mind), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (enlightenment).

Swami Veda has said about yoga postures: “The principle that brings an asana to success is awareness, breath-flow along the asanas, right sequences and relaxation during the asana. Hatha is not doing advanced postures, it is doing simple postures in an advanced way.  It is the subtleties. In your teaching and your practice, don’t go for the advanced.  Go for the subtler; that is the advanced.” Please read these Philosophy of Hatha Yoga excerpts for a taste of the experience and approach.

Participants will be experienced with asana and have a regular practice before admission to this training. From this common knowledge base, we will focus on subtle energies and practices to allow you to teach yoga as a spiritual practice through the integration of body, prana, mind. Through the depth of your own practice, you will inspire and guide students.

This 200 hour yoga certification program is offered in a combination of online classes, home study and a one week retreat near the ocean in Nova Scotia Canada. We will be a small group working directly with Lynn Fraser.
